The development of Telecommunication – from wired communication to wireless communication

Telecom is a short version of Telecommunication. Because telecommunication is a kind of infrastructure of communication in a country or between countries many telecom companies are state owned or partly state owned. We have a parallel in the historical development of airplane companies. In the area of telecom and air carriers from the beginning of the technology it became a national interest to support and to stir the development of the industry. For telecommunication companies we find the aspect of national interest in company names like British Telecom, Deutsche Telekom, Telecom New Zealand, Telecom Australia and France telecom. The traditions are to some extent different from country to country. Many countries have or have had national telecommunications monopolies, but a huge country like USA has had telephone companies that were not national.

Obviously telecommunication has a strong military side, too, and that has been of strong national interest in all countries.

Originally telecommunication was linked to wired communication, like the telegraph in the beginning and later for a long time telephone networks, operated by telephone operating companies. But in recent decades the availability of mobile phones (cellular phones) has revolutionized the whole telecom industry. In a number of developing countries and in thinly populated areas the wireless mobile phone networks have surpassed the use of wired communication with traditional phones often like jumping over the phase of wired communication for people in general. The attractiveness of being able to communicate through wireless mobile phones wherever you are has been a tremendous success for the individual as well as for most telecom companies and the requirements of establishment of networks are very different compared to more traditional wired communication.

The availability of many different payment schedules for using mobiles, like permanent subscription under certain conditions, pay as you go payment schedules and the system of buying a certain amount of traffic for mobile phones have all contributed to the flexibility of wireless communication and to the popularity of mobile phones not least among young people. The combination of traditional phone talk with ability of sending and receiving SMS messages has been a big success. Likewise the move into smart phones with many more functions available on hand is now changing the simplicity of mobile phones into small technological wonders with an unlimited array of applications.

Successful Telecoms Recruitment

An article that looks at what telecoms is and how to go about successfully recruiting individuals to fill a role within the telecoms area. What are the methods available and why using telecoms recruitment agency might be the answer.

Telecoms is short for telecommunications, and telecommunications is a way of transmitting a signal over a large or short distance using satellite, telephony, radio, cable or television. As telecoms are an ever growing and changing area of business there are always roles within it that need to be filled. Many of these jobs are available for people who have little or no experience in the field of telecoms and they can be advertised and filled quite easily with on site training given once a person is in their job.

However, there are certain telecoms jobs where this kind of approach tends to be very unsuccessful and this is where specialists in telecoms recruitment are needed. For example if a company is looking for an experienced telecoms engineer it can be unlikely that the usual advertising will help them to find the correct person. Such a role requires someone with extensive knowledge, who needs no training and is able and enthusiastic to keep up to date with any changes and developments in their specific area. And this is where telecoms recruitment becomes necessary.

There are various different ways in which a company can find the right person to fill a vacant telecoms position. One way is by advertising in specialist telecoms publications, these kinds of magazines and periodicals tend, because of their dry subject matter for many, to be only read by those who have an interest and are looking for career development in the telecoms area. This means that an advertisement for a job vacancy is better placed to get responses from more qualified individuals than one in a local or national newspaper, or job paper.

Some companies will promote from within to fill a telecoms vacancy and this can create both benefits and downsides in telecoms recruitment. One of the benefits is that if a person is already working within a company their skills and knowledge is already known and to a certain extent much of the usual testing before a job is offered does not have to take place. This can cut down on the amount of time spent looking for an individual to fill a vacancy. One downside to this kind of telecoms recruitment can be that a better candidate for the role, who is outside of the company will not be considered as the role was not advertised externally. However it is down to the company with the vacancy to decide which the best is for them.

One of the most popular ways of finding a person to fill a telecoms role is to use the services of a specialised telecoms recruitment agency. Such agencies will have individuals on their records that have different skills and abilities within the telecoms area and they will be able to find exactly the right person to match a company’s needs. There is no need to place adverts, sift through mountains of applications and interview several people, all of whom may be unsuitable, when an agency can do this for you. By the time an agency sends a candidate to you they will have been tested and interviewed at length to make sure that they are what you are looking for. Telecoms recruitment agencies will obviously charge for this service but this cost is usually worthwhile compared to the time that may be spent in-house finding the right person for the role.

Telecoms recruitment can be a difficult process, but by looking in the right places for the best candidate a company will be successful. Agencies and advertisements, used correctly will provide any company with the kind of staff to be proud of.

Telecommunications Financing Options for Small Business Telecom Companies

If your small business were a grocery store or automotive mechanic shop, most every lender in the U.S. would immediately understand your business model. If you were to approach them looking for a line of credit, they would be able to rather quickly determine if your business is able to receive some small business financing from them or not. However, as the owner of a telecommunications company you know that this is not always the case for your industry. Traditional lenders just simply do not understand how telecom companies do business and the intracacies of telecommunications funding.

If you are a large multi-national telecom company, funding abounds for you just simply because of the huge amount of revenue your business generates month after month. However, if you are a small telecom business, obtaining that line of credit can be much more difficult. When you approach a traditional lender for funding, you will likely find that they do not understand your business model and telecommunications financing in general. It is not in the traditional banker’s interest to work with telecommunications businesses with receivables that are all small amounts with many customers. Generally, your receivables take 45 or more days to receive after delivery of services. Because these billing issues are unique to the telecom industry, traditional lenders do not fully comprehend the fine details and tend to choose to deal with businesses in more traditional roles.

Once your small telecommunications business is on solid ground, and you are looking to expand your market base, there are three options readily availablec to you for obtaining small business financing. These three options are: factoring, asset based solutions, and investment capital. Let’s take a quick look at each of these options:

Factoring: Factoring is a financing process which allows your company to borrow money against its receivables; your receivables are used as the collateral for the loan. The down side to traditional factoring is that this type of funding generally comes with high interest rates. By finding a lender with telecommunications financing experience, you can sometimes find a lower rate. This makes factoring a strong consideration only if you are able to locate a specialized lender with telecommunications financing experience.

Asset Based Solutions: Asset based funding solutions involve using your existing contracts, equipment, and other assets, as the collateral for your funding. This can be a good option to consider if you have a lot of assets or large contracts to leverage. However, if you own a very small local telecom company, your company may not have the assets or contracts to make this form of funding work. In that case, investment capital may be a good option to consider.

Investment Capital: If your business is open to the idea of investment capital, versus a traditional line of credit, investment capital can be a win-win situation for everyone.

While finding small business financing can be challenging in the telecommunications industry, it is not impossible. When it is time for your small telecom company to expand you should consider factoring, asset based solutions, and investment capital as possible options. Whatever your decision may be, as long as it fits within your long-term business plans, then you are sure to succeed.
